Career Mobility Program in Nursing Submitted

Purpose Statement: The purpose of
the program is to provide a seamless educational curriculum in nursing with two
exit points allowing students to choose a career as an LPN or RN. Students who successfully complete the first
year will receive a diploma qualifying them to apply for licensure as practical
nurses. Following successful completion
of the second year, students will receive the Associate in Applied Science
Degree in Nursing qualifying them to apply for licensure as registered nurses.

To Implement an Evening/weekend
Practical Nursing Program to accommodate students who can not attend the day
program. |
To provide technical
programs, based on local, regional, and state employment needs for students
seeking immediate employment upon graduation. |
Nursing pre-admission
conferences were conducted to determine the interest for an evening/weekend
Practical Nursing Program. Sixty one-one (61) individuals attended
pre-admission conferences to apply for admission to the program. Applicants are also asked complete a survey
stating their preferences for times when class and lab/clinicals should be
held October 25, 2005 minutes of the Nursing Advisory Committee, Committee indicates that members support the implementation of the evening/weekend practical nursing program. Members noted the need for alternate class schedules for students with family responsibilities who could not otherwise. |
The number of individuals expressing interest in an evening/weekend practical nursing program and the Nursing Advisory Committee’s input indicates the need to implement an evening/weekend Practical Nursing Program.. |
Thirty (30) students were
admitted to the Evening/weekend Practical Nursing Program January 2006, thus
providing nursing education to students who could not otherwise enroll in
nursing. Twenty-six (26) students will
graduate in December 2006. |

Graduates
are safe practitioners who collaborate with other health care professionals
to provide evidenced-based nursing care for clients with complex health
problems across the life span in a variety of settings. |
To offer a community
service program that helps to meet the recreational, cultural, educational
and social needs of the area. |
The Kentucky Board of
Nursing expanded the scope of LPN practice to include the administration of
IV Push/Bolus medication and the administration of Blood/blood products. The current PN curriculum does
not include the expanded scope of LPN Practice |
The PN curriculum does not
include the administration of IV Push/Bolus medication and the administration
of Blood/blood products. Calls from hospitals and
nursing home requesting workshops for their LPNs to practice the expanded
scope of practice indicate the need to present the workshop addressing the
expanded scope of LPN practice |
The PN curriculum was
revised to include the administration of IV Push/Bolus medication and the
administration of Blood/blood products. Three
(3) workshops were implemented on Expanded
Scope of LPN IV Practice: Administration
IV Push/Bolus Medication and one (1) workshop on Expanded Scope of LPN IV
Practice: Administration of Blood and
Blood Products were implemented in order to have PN graduates prepared for
the expanded scope of practice. |

Graduates are critical
thinkers who interpret and analyze comprehensive assessment data to formulate
clinical judgments about clients, family and defined populations across the
life span. |

indicates that that the attrition rate in the first and third semester is 40%. Current
Nursing software is not sufficient to enhance student critical thinking
skills |
Program attrition rate
indicates the need for additional
educational aids such as software that simulates nursing situations in order
to increase critical thinking skills, thereby, decreasing attrition. The |

modules 1629.00 · Nurse ProCalc 3 modules 1199.00 Mandatory attendance at a
time management and test-taking workshop was implemented for students
enrolled in the first and third semester of the program. Future data will be analyze to determine that critical thinking skills were enhanced as evidenced by increased completion rates for the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree levels of the Nursing Mobility Program. |
