Description:

Professional Craft Design covers the development of craft marketing promotional materials and the development of customer, site influenced, or student generated design. The course also introduces the concepts and processes of 35mm and digital studio photography for the professional craftsperson. Topics include designing logos, hangtags, web sites, brochures, portfolios, and related promotional materials as well as customer guided, site specific, and other design directions. Topics in the photography portion of the class include the 35mm camera and related equipment, the digital camera and related equipment, basic studio lighting theory, simple to advanced lighting techniques, composition, print and slide evaluation, and marketing applications. The course will consist of a series of lectures, demonstrations, and laboratory activities focusing on understanding basic course content and applying that understanding to the craftperson’s media.

List of experiments/activities

  1. Creation of a personal photography portfolio of one’s work including at least 24 professional quality color slides, 12 black and white prints. The slides and prints should demonstrate understanding of advanced lighting techniques and the basics of 35mm film photography.
  2. Creation of an individual portfolio to include resume, artists statement, business card, minimum of 12 good quality slides of either marketing or jury genre, two or more color photos or photocopies of current work, two or more black and white photos of current work, cost research on the price of portfolio production.
  3. Generation and creation of a customer-directed, site-influenced, or student-generated design to include a) student-identified design basis and direction for the project presented in written form; b) student-established goals for completing or pursuing the design direction presented in written form; and c) completed solution as established in the goals.
