Prerequisites: Functional Pottery I
Description:
This course continues previous skill development in functional pottery, including limited production and one of a kind pieces with emphasis on forming techniques. Topics include multiple cylinder forms, thrown additions, advanced production skills, glaze testing, surface decoration, and firing techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to produce entry level professional work for show and sale using a variety of forming and finishing techniques.
Upon completion students should be able to:
- Produce entry-level professional work for show and sale using a variety of forming and finishing techniques.
- Define and produce a group of work suitable for show and/or sale
- Work unsupervised in all phases of producing, glazing, and firing work
- Produce basic to advanced one-of-a-kind pots using stacked cylinders, thrown additions, and coil and throw techniques
- Participate in a show or sale
Course Outline
I. PRODUCING ONE-OF-A-KIND WORK
- Forming technique
- Surface treatment and decoration
II. KILN LOADING & FIRING
- Kiln process and firing records
- Alternative methods
- Salt glazing
- Sagger firing
- Sawdust firing
- Single fire
III. CREATING A BODY OF WORK FOR SHOW AND /OR SALE
- Defining a common theme and design
- Incorporating previous work
Students will follow one of the three options below with the expected outcome of producing a body of work suitable for a show or sale.
Option 1
- 25 mugs with surface decoration
- 20 small bowls
- 20 tea bowls or wine cups with surface decoration
- 1 stacked cylinder vessel
- 1 assembled pot made of two or more thrown parts
- 1 vessel made up of hand built and thrown combination
Option 2
- Six place dinnerware setting of personal design to include large plate, small plate, bowl, and mug or cup and larger serving bowls, casserole, pitcher and water glasses
- 1 stacked cylinder vessel
- 1 assembled pot made of two or more thrown parts
- 1 vessel made up of hand built and thrown combination
Option 3
- 100 pots of your own choosing
- 1 stacked cylinder vessel
- 1 assembled pot made of two or more thrown parts
- 1 vessel made up of hand built and thrown combination
